I checked off other in addition to some of the above ones. One major reason I use a whiteboard is because whatever I am drawing is too big to fit on a piece of paper (unles my writing was teeny tiny and unreadable).

Brainstorming is easier when you can map outward from a space and work in subgroupings, something that's best done on a wide surface enabling you to concentrate on different areas at a time or step back to assess as a collection. If you're going to write down and across a surface like a sheet of paper, it seems easier if you use something your eyes can track over completely at one time.

For me, teaching is a lot easier when you can use large pictures, with the ability to quickly erase and show changes - especially when teaching about moderately complex data structures. This applies just as much to one-on-one tutoring sessions (where paper might be otherwise practical) as it does to full classes.

Also, a whiteboard on the refrigerator is a great way to communicate with roommates, for things like "I made muffins, eat them!"

* Erasability is really handy, especially when you're working your way through messy algebra.
* In addition to being able to write bigger (which I do think is useful), I can write more without having to specifically worry about organization (i.e., which sheet of paper stuff should go on).

I can erase a whiteboard much more quickly and thoroughly than paper. I can both use multiple colors and erase a whiteboard, which I can't do well with paper. I have paper, but I would use a lot of it if I didn't use the whiteboard, most of it for things I don't need to save.

On a whiteboard I find it easier to write down tentative thoughts, intermediate steps, and things that are probably wrong.

Why waste paper --> trees --> forrests --> etc. when you don't have to? If it is not something that you plan to keep for a long while, you don't need it to be portable, or you have no other specific reason to use paper, why do it?

The main reason I bought a white-board was to practice chalk-talks and improve my board-writing and drawing skills.

Secondarily, it erases cleaner than paper and I have different color markers, so it's very useful for things like concept sketches and diagrams where I expect to be making constant revisions as I draw.

I really like whiteboards over paper for a couple of reasons:

1) I can erase and re-draw as many times as I like. Especially nice when I'm drawing some sort of schematic, and want to move lines and boxes until I get things sorted out. Even with pencil, paper just doesn't erase as cleanly.

2) I have lots of colors of whiteboard marker, and they don't make multiple colors of erasable pencils.

3) My whiteboard is on the wall next to my desk at work, so after I get the drawing worked out, it's up there as a quick reference for the next two weeks.

cause messages change from day to day and its more envirofriendly to use whiteboard then lots of paper. Also I display phone #s in large letters and #s by the phone of most important phone #s so they will always be there.
