This story starts over 3 and a half years ago, before Josh and I were engaged, but after Josh started asking me what kind of ring I might want (when I was still reminding him that I wasn't sure if I would ever be ready to say 'yes'). Anyway, Josh was visiting me at my parents' house for a few days before we headed back to college together, and we were at Fred Meyer picking up a few things for our dorm rooms. We also stopped and looked at rings since Josh had been bugging me for a while about what kind of rings I liked (and I was freaked out that if I didn't give him opinions, if/when the time came he might take his mother and sister's suggestions of platinum with a big honking diamond--not what I wanted to wear and certainly not what I wanted him spending a lot of money on!). The ring browsing went like this, according to my LJ entry at the time:

"Anyhow, we browsed around. My philosophy is that if we get engaged and have engagement rings, they aught to match and they aught to be at least semi-unique. I wouldn't really want to look like I was engaged at all just yet, but when I do, I don't want to look like I'm engaged to just anyone, now do I? So there were lots of rings that I liked and there were lots of rings that Josh liked. The intersection of these two sets included exactly one ring. We didn't ask the price on it. I didn't want to even pretend that we were that serious."

But a few weeks later, I got curious: "I was looking for a good way to put off my [homework] just now, and there was a serious lack of new email and LJ posts for me to read, so I decided I wanted to know how much the ring was. Suffice it to say that it was only the second cheapest ring in the store that wasn't just a plain band. I guess that they just have to jack up the prices on the ugly rings to get men to buy them by tricking them into thinking that they have no taste and guilt-tripping them into buying expensive rings (and jewelry in general)." Incidentally I went back today (August 9, 2006) and checked to see what the cheapest ring was, and "our ring" is now the absolute cheapest gemstone ring at Fred Meyer Jewelers.

I posted a picture of the ring in my journal for my records at the time. That ring has always stuck in my mind, because of the way we picked it out together. By the time we got engaged, however, we had hit upon the idea of making our own rings, and decided that was better and more personal. Besides which, Josh had decided that as much as he liked the amethyst heart ring for me, he didn't actually want to wear anything that feminine himself. So our engagement rings and wedding rings were the rings I made myself, and while I couldn't be happier about them, I've always remembered that amethyst heart ring, and wished from time to time that Josh had purchased it for me, you know, just because.

Anyway, fast forward to a couple months ago, and I'm browsing eBay for amethyst heart rings, as I have from time to time over the last 3 and a half years. And there it was! (Well, on the 65th page of amethyst heart rings, but you get the idea.) I asked Josh to buy it for me, and he did. He's had it for a month or so now, but he wanted to wait to give it to me until after I forgot about it... like that would happen! He pulled it out last night and gave it to me. I hadn't forgotten and I saw him getting it out (he thought I was busy making juice, but I got done faster than he expected and was walking a glass into the bedroom for him... you know what they say about 'no good deed goes unpunished'). He couldn't stop laughing, and neither could I, but he still pulled it out and asked me to continue being married to him. I told him I'd think about it. What can I say? Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer.

I should also point out that this is the second piece of jewelry Josh has ever given me. He gave me a star sapphire necklace for our first anniversary.
