So did Spike know he was going to get his soul back? I thought he was trying to get the chip out so he could be a monster again... but maybe what he wanted was to be a man again. He was living between worlds and I've been thinking for a while he really needs the one or the other.
My impression was that his goal for going there was to get the demon(?) to remove the chip. For its own reasons, the demon decided to give him his soul back instead.
because that was his hearts desire. He wanted to show Buffy how much he loved her. that he would get a soul (like Angel) and therefore be WORTHY of her in his eyes again. He no longer desiered to be a monster again, but a man so that Buffy would look at him and see not a monster, but a man - and maybe love him as she had Angel.
