Miss Barton,

I expect this will be of interest to Miss Barton:

A state law in Illinois mandates that all bachelors should be called master, not mister, when addressed by their female counterparts.

Woah. In my pysch of sex class today we were talking about weird sex laws in states, and that was actually one of the laws she read aloud (even though it doesn't deal directly with sex). Weird that you posted it in the same day. :-)

Miss Manners says that the plural of "Master" (to be used when, for instance, one is addressing a wedding invitation to the male children of a family) is "Messrs". I can't remember whether it has a period or not.
