Actually, I've noticed this too about my parents. At first, I thought it was a form of adult diplomacy, to ignore something in an ambiguous way so that you could not respond. Now I think that hearing degrades with age along with vision. This is why I want to become a biomechanical engineer. (One of the reasons, at least.) I can't just wait for all the fantastical body modifications/augmentations/fixes you read about in scifi to come along on their own.
