Well, my talk with Prof Bassman on Monday, which made me disgustingly late to the Balinese Gamelin Ensemble, seems to have paid off. It was pretty disappointing at the time because by the end of it I still didn't know how to really do damping. However, the things that she did teach me seem to have included exactly what I need to know to solve the nodal point problem, which was more important than the damping problem anyway. The nodal point problem was supposed to be Brendan's, but at this point in the semester, we've decided that we should all just work on the most important problems, in the hopes that one of us will be successful.

This afternoon I have been in the ECF working with Prof Saeta on the modeling. Brendan was supposed to be here too, but he showed up late and then had to leave early. Modeling is less depressing with company--even if that company is Saeta, if you can believe it. It is more productive that working by myself partly because it is less lonely, and party because we can put our heads together when we get stuck. There is also a certain sense that my advisor knows that I am trying even if I am not successful, so my time isn't being wasted if I don't actually get results. Peace of mind can be so helpful to productivity. Having someone to watch me so I don't go off to LJ when I should be working is also helpful... Saeta just had to run off to a meeting....

I still have to do a fair bit of crunching away at this computer, but it feels really good to know that I am on the right path and have a method I am confident will give me a solution to one of the two most important design problems we have left.
