Well, this is the very special branch of the family where I am rather surprised only one person said it, and I can only assume a lot of them thought it. There are a lot of us (5 children, a mess of grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren + 1 in the cooker, with most of the grandchildren's families not to or beyond their first baby), and I can count on the fingers of one hand the number (in all the generations put together) who are happily married to the first spouse more than 3 years later. A lasting marriage is, unfortunately, not exactly the expected outcome as far as many of them are concerned.
Had I been visiting my dad's side of the family, I'm sure no one would have said anything like that and I would be extremely surprised if the idea even crossed any of their minds. That side of the family is similarly large, and only 2 of them have ever divorced (and for one of them, it was *so* not her fault... and the other has been happily remarried for around 20 years).
