So... remember that bookcase we were working on at Christmas-time? Well, we finally got it all assembled. All the dowel-holes have been drilled, it's been strong-armed together, squared up, and had it's back put on. Putting the back on was interesting because not only did it not particularly care to be square (as we kind of expected), the boards which have been leaning up against the wall in our bedroom for the last 4 months have kind of warped, so it didn't even particularly care to be a parallelogram. But we worked our way down the back, bending, twisting, drilling, and screwing, and we were actually able to straighten it surprisingly well. Now its all being held together by the screws through the back and we're just going to let it sit for the next 2 weeks (that's how long it'll be before we have a weekend we can work on it again) in the hopes that it will tend to unwarp itself. We also have a pile of chemistry books on one of the top front corners, which isn't quite as tight together as we want, so hopefully that will tend to correct itself as well.
Then in 2 weeks we will disassemble it, pre-stain it, stain it, glue and clamp the shelves in (and totally reassemble the rest without glue), wait for it to dry, then take off the back, glue and clamp the end caps on, reattach the back, wait for it to dry, take the clamps of and say, "Yay! A finished bookcase at last!" Somehow I'm thinking that's going to take more than just one weekend.
Hmmm... Does anyone in the Chicago area happen to own a big sheet of plastic that they'd be willing to loan out to us to use as a drop cloth for staining and gluing over? And perhaps some pipe clamps?
