Well... this explains how it got to be the 17th without the rent check getting cashed: The whole end of the letter got ripped off in the high speed cancelling equipment... and so they sent it back to me. Would have been nice if they'd sent it on to our land lord instead. Would also be nice if they'd sent it back a bit sooner--it's been nearly 4 weeks since I stuck it in the mail in the first place. Would also be nice if they paid the late fee to our land lord (if he chooses to charge us one). Sigh.
