Topic: Need legal advice...RE: boss''s reaction to my pregnancy
From: kawanders Date: 8/19/2005 at 8:16 pm

I am currently a third year PhD student, and my job is the result of a grant from the American Cancer Society. I look at the cardiotoxicities associated with chemotherapy drugs (on rats). I told my boss/advisor yesterday that I was pg (I'm about 9.5 weeks), and came to work today to find that I was being "reassigned" to another job -- permanently. This job comes with a $600/month pay cut, I may or may not get benefits anymore, and is a huge step down for me. And, he's trying to say that after the baby comes I still won't be able to get my old job back, b/c "that wouldn't be fair to the person who takes over my responsibilities" -- okay, this person he's talking about is going to start his first year on monday. He doesn't know anything really about this guy, how he'll work, etc. Meanwhile, I did this research for over a year w/o being paid and spent the last 2 years busting my as$ trying to get the respect of my boss (who after today I think is a huge sexist pig). He actually had the nerve to tell me today that he couldn't believe I would "go and get pregnant". I just don't know what to do about this. it can't be legal to do what they are doing. Not to mention, they are having a meeting on monday (my advisors and the department chair), and I'm not even allowed to go to it. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Karen
