Work today
Jun. 10th, 2003 12:15 pmSafety training stuff today. It was pretty boring mostly, but it's good that they have it. The first guy was really funny. He started out by warning us about the wildlife. There are squirels, jackrabits, foxes, snakes (rattle and otherwise), and even a mountain lion (sighted two years ago). Anyway, he pretty much just warned us not to try to pet or feed the animals because "The squirels will bite you. The foxes will bite you. And the mountain lion might eat you." Then he told us about the bicycles. Sandia has 200 sky blue bikes for people to use getting around the lab. He showed a slide with a picture of a bike parked in the middle of a path next to a "no bikes beyond this point" sign. He said that they got some complaints about the one bike, but didn't consider it to be a big problem. However, when there is a big event in a building beyond that sign... he showed another slide with about 8 bikes parked in the path making look pretty annoying to walk past. So that was a problem and he engineered that problem out by putting in a bike rack. He showed a picture of the bike rake being put in and pointed out the two shadows of the people who were camera shy, and mentioned them by name. Then he showed a picture demonstraiting that the bike rack was being used and that it was big enough most of the time. But then he showed a picture of when there was a really big event and pointed out that since there was a bike rack (even though it was full) people still parked their bikes to the side of the path. Anyhow, it was funny, but probably something else you really just needed to be there for. He also gave us the name and phone number of a person to contact if you don't know how to ride a bike, so that you can be taught. I thought that was cool.
I was feeling kind of lonely sitting alone. Most of the other interns seem to have grouped up because they all live together in the intern apartments. I was, however, joined by that girl I told you guys about earlier, the one who was acting like a newly-wed a week ago, even though she'd been married for a year. We talked some. She went to BYU, but she's not planning on going back. I didn't ask if she'd graduated. I tried to be friendly and positive; I think I did okay. I was thinking, as she sat down next to me, why her of all people? But it makes sense, she's living somewhere else with her husband so she doesn't have a group of interns she knows either.
Well, look at that, it's time to go back to the boring safety thing... So long all.
