Actually I've been back since last night, but whatever. I'm also back now.

The train trip was really relaxing, and perhaps exactly what I needed. It was really nice to just kick back with nothing in particular to do and many hours to do it in. It was also a fun time with Josh because it was so low stress. Many times with Josh get ruined because I am too stressed out to appreciate being with him. We slept in the Kiddie car, and had a blanket along, which was a grand improvement over last year when we slept in the observation car with out a blanket. One of my sides would stay warm because of the baseboard heating, but the other side would get cold. The space between the seats and the windows was too narrow for two people so we couldn't even lie next to each other to keep warm. We handled our own food this year, which meant it was better than the food last year, but we also brought way too much. But having way too much food wasn't all bad, it meant I didn't have to worry about food at all and made the trip more relaxing because I knew there would be enough. The other Mudders on the train had arranged for Jeff to come get them at LAX. There was not enough space in his car for Josh and I, but there was enough space for some of our stuff, which was a total life saver. Then we took the Foothill Transit bus #480 back to Claremont. (Actually, we almost took the 480 bus into LA, but a nice young man directed us to the correct bus stop just in time.) It dropped us off at the south end of Claremont, which made for a long but not unbearable walk back to Mudd. Oh, and for future reference for anyone training to Mudd, the bus is faster and cheaper and gets you closer to Mudd than taking the second leg of train that Marcy put us on last year.

I'm somewhat glad to be back in the familiar surroundings of Mudd, but at the same time, I still feel unrecovered from last semester and I'm really not ready to be attending classes again. There are many reasons I can point to for why my grades were so much worse last semester than in the past, but one of the big ones is burn out, and I'm still burned out. I attempted the Quantum stuff on the train, I could do one of the problems by myself. There are two more I think I can do after I look up some stuff that I couldn't look up on the train. So I will be wanting to talk about the other problems (and maybe those too) with someone (like say Tamara or Ariel) sometime if that is okay.

This morning I woke up with my first nose bleed that I am aware of ever having. That was kind of weird to wake up with my left nostril entirely full of blood.

So Josh got a letter from Vanderbilt saying that the Chemistry program likes him and is recommending that the graduate school accepts him. Mostly this is good and I am glad they like him, but that doesn't change the fact that I really don't want him to go that far away. Hopefully he will chose something else, but he's seemed more enthusiastic about Vanderbilt than anywhere but UCSD, and without a research advisor recommendation he may have slim chances of getting in since that is supposed to be their primary consideration.
